In honor of LGBT Pride Month, we’re looking at some of the best places to visit around the world, destinations that have a reputation for being progressive and welcoming to everyone, including members of the LGBT community. Like the United States, many countries are continuing to make strides in enacting laws that protect the rights of the LGBT community, and, in the case of some, they’ve been far more progressive than the United States for quite some time.
Here are three wonderfully welcoming countries we’re excited to visit this year…
Argentina. Having legalized same-sex marriage almost a decade ago, Argentina continues to be one of the most friendly countries in the world for tourists. Known for its tango and out-of-this-world steak, Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, is like the Paris of South America, bursting with culture, music, great food, and amazing people.
Denmark. In 1989, Denmark began recognizing same-sex partnerships, making it the very first country to do so. In 2012, Denmark officially legalized same-sex marriage, three years before the United States. Widely recognized as one of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark and its capital, Copenhagen, are also regulars on lists for the best places in the world for LGBT individuals to live.
Luxembourg. Xavier Bettel, the prime minister of Luxembourg, made history in 2014 when he became the first European leader in office to marry a same-sex partner. A small European country with medieval towns and unbelievable views, Luxembourg is an often overlooked gem that should be on your radar while planning your next trip.
Thankfully, more and more countries are passing progressive laws that allow members of the LGBT community to enjoy the same rights that other citizens enjoy. While some countries are still less than ideal for LGBT travel, many more provide a wonderful atmosphere, great people, and fabulous memories.
